How to buy a non-toxic gift without overthinking it
Three rules cover almost everything.
Buy fiber, not adjectives. "Eco-friendly," "sustainable," "conscious" and "responsible" are unregulated words with no definition behind them. "100% organic cotton" is a fact. If the product page won't give a percentage for every fiber, it's a blend.
Skip anything with a performance finish. Water-repellent, stain-resistant, wrinkle-free, antimicrobial — each means a chemical was applied to make the fabric do something the fiber couldn't. It's the single easiest thing to filter for and almost nobody checks it.
"Recycled" isn't the same as clean. Recycled polyester is still plastic and sheds microplastics exactly as virgin polyester does. Good waste story, not a health one.

What to avoid as a gift
Anything described only as "performance fabric." That's polyester with better copy.
Recycled-polyester activewear. Well-intentioned, still plastic, still sheds.
"Bamboo" anything, unless it says lyocell. Most bamboo fabric is viscose — chemically regenerated cellulose. Better than polyester, not the same as cotton, and the FTC has taken action over bamboo marketing claims.
Water-repellent or stain-resistant anything. The finish is the point of the product and the finish is the problem.
Sizing and returns, so it doesn't come back
